Community OutreachOutreach is an important component of the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies’ mission to advance awareness of Latin American and Caribbean culture and politics. Through various programs the Center connects the community at large with Latin American and Caribbean researchers, policy makers and public figures. Our outreach efforts include: Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies Migrant Farm Worker Clinic Summer Intern Fellowship CLACS Migrant Farm Worker Fellowship Form This $1000 fellowship supports the summer work and research of UConn Honors undergraduates with the UConn Migrant Farm Worker Clinic. Eligibility limited to graduates of the HIST/PRLS/LAMS 1570: Honors Core: Migrant Workers in Connecticut class. Connecticut hosts over 17,000 migrant farm workers annually. This population is part of the poorest group in the United States with the highest rate of occupational injury and illness with little or no access to health care. This invisible population provides an invaluable service to the economy and yet goes without health coverage, Medicaid and Social Security, and often is unaware of their Worker’s Compensation benefits. To address this issue, the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and Connecticut Area Health Education Program (CT AHEC) developed the UConn Migrant Farm Worker Clinics which provide free primary health care, health education, and increased access to quality, community-based, primary health care services to migrant and seasonal farm worker populations in Connecticut. For more information visit http://publichealth.uconn.edu/aboutus_mfwc.php. CLACS Farm Worker Fellows will assist with primary care screenings and health education outreach among migrant farm workers. In the academic semester following their fellowship, fellows will give presentation on their work and contribute a related article to the CLACS newsletter, Ariel. *This fellowship has been established by funds from the UConn Honors Program endowment and CLACS.
